Noyce - Very likely his estimates are as good as we are likely to
get for the questions he has considered. However, he does not
consider what may be accomplished in customizing the design of
LSI. Not everything is appropriately done by microprocessors,
so that reducing the costs and time for making a small quantity
of an integrated circuit will have a very large payoff. Could
a computer driven IC maker be built that could be purchased
by a laboratory? Could programs be developed that would permit
a laboratory to design integrated circuits and then ship the
design to a manufacturer by telephone? The limiting case is
that it should be feasible to have a single integrated circuit
manufactured. What is the tradeoff between this and using
a fatter micro-processor? What will the trade-off be in 20
years if research is put into this problem?
